Aizu Urushi Art Festival 2012
From October 6 to November 23, “Aizu Urushi Art Festival 2012” takes place in Aizuwakamatsu city and Kitakata city in Fukushima prefecture.
Total of eighty-two artists and groups are participating, and their artworks using Urushi, Japanese lacquer are exhibited at nearly forty sites in both cities.
This event was founded with the aim to tell people the depth of the history of the Aizu area, richness of culture and attractiveness of the city, and will be held for the third time this year.
The sub-theme of the event this time is “Memory of the Land- towards the Future”.
The tsunami and the accident of the nuclear powerplant caused by last spring’s Great East Japan Earthquake have left homes and belongings damaged, and hearts broken. This event hopes to help us move forward by facing the memory of the land through the traditional craft of lacquer, which had been nurtured in Aizu.
During the event, workshops and symposiums featuring lacquer is held as well as art exhibitions.
